Our Story

Passed down through generations, our farming practices are rooted in care for the land, fair treatment of our people, and a relentless commitment to quality.

Our Story Begins at the Origin of the Coffee Industry

Back home in Uganda, coffee is more than a crop—it’s a way of life. Passed down through generations, our farming practices are rooted in care for the land, fair treatment of our people, and a relentless commitment to quality. For years, we’ve cultivated robust Robusta beans on fertile flatlands under ideal growing conditions—rich volcanic soil, ample rainfall, and warm equatorial sun.

With each harvest, we’ve refined our methods to produce Robusta that rivals even the finest Arabicas in complexity and crema. Our coffees offer a diverse range of flavor profiles and are ideal for blending, appealing to those seeking both specialty and high-caffeine options. We take pride in our approach to roasting, carefully controlling the process to bring out the best in our beans and ensure optimal freshness and flavor. Kawawa 1900 is our effort to share this story, this flavour, and this standard with the UK market.

Marcus

The Founder

Marcus’s journey is one of craft, curiosity, and flavor. For over a decade, he honed his art as a pastry chef in some of the world’s most celebrated kitchens including Ladurée, Hakkasan Mast Brothers . Surrounded by the rich aromas of chocolate, pastries, and freshly brewed espresso, his appreciation for the delicate harmony between pastry and coffee began to take root.

It was during his time in Egypt that Marcus’s fascination with coffee blossomed into a true calling. Drawn by its depth, culture, and community, he returned to his family’s coffee farm in Uganda to immerse himself in every stage of the bean’s journey, from harvest to roast. Today, his work weaves together his love for gourmet craft and the timeless ritual of coffee, sharing a taste experience inspired by both his culinary heritage and his Ugandan roots.

Rooted in Uganda

Roasted for London

At Kawawa 1900, coffee isn’t just a product—it’s a legacy. We are proud coffee growers from the lush, flatland soils of Uganda, bringing generations of farming tradition to the heart of the UK’s coffee scene. Founded by a family of growers who understand the land as deeply as they understand the coffee plant and the unique characteristics of the coffee bean, Kawawa 1900 exists to introduce a bolder, more honest Robusta to London’s roasters, baristas and coffee enthusiasts. Robusta, scientifically known as Coffea canephora, is renowned for its resilience against pests and diseases, higher yield, and its significant role in global coffee production. The cultivation of the coffee plant in Uganda is central to our heritage and commitment to quality.

Our Farms

This is where all the magic and care happens. For farms are located in the fertile fields of Uganda.

Rooted in heritage and nurtured through tradition, our Robusta coffee begins its journey on thoughtfully managed farms where quality and ethical practices lead the way. From seedling to harvest, every step is traceable and guided by sustainable methods, so you can enjoy bold character and consistent crema, cup after cup.

We start with resilient Robusta varietals suited to flatland cultivation, spacing seedlings for airflow and healthy root development. Shade management, mulching, and careful soil preparation promote strong early growth and long-term plant vitality.
